Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a harmful cultural practice that affects millions of girls and women worldwide. In Kenya, significant progress has been made in raising awareness about the dangers of FGM, yet the practice continues to persist in many communities. Save A Youth Africa (SAYA) is committed to eradicating FGM by 2030, aligning with global efforts to end this violation of human rights.

Understanding FGM
FGM involves the partial or total removal of female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized as a violation of the rights of girls and women. It can lead to severe health complications, including chronic pain, infections, and complications during childbirth. Beyond physical harm, FGM also has psychological effects, contributing to trauma and anxiety among survivors.

SAYA’s Approach
SAYA’s FGM eradication initiative focuses on community engagement and education. We collaborate with local leaders, health professionals, and youth advocates to foster open dialogues about the implications of FGM. Our programs aim to educate communities about the harmful effects of FGM and the importance of protecting girls’ rights.

Community-Led Change
Through community-led initiatives, we empower local voices to advocate against FGM. This includes training ambassadors of change—both men and women—who can influence their peers and promote the abandonment of this practice. By addressing cultural norms and beliefs, we are creating a sustainable change that will last for generations.

Achievements and Impact
Since launching our campaign, we have seen significant community engagement. More than 300 individuals have publicly declared their commitment to abandoning FGM, showcasing a shift in attitudes. These changes highlight the effectiveness of our grassroots approach in fostering dialogue and education.

Call to Action
Join us in our mission to end FGM by 2030. Your support can help amplify our efforts, providing resources for education and outreach programs that protect girls’ rights. Together, we can create a future free from the harms of FGM, ensuring that every girl grows up healthy, empowered, and free from violence.
