Teenage pregnancy remains a pressing issue in Kenya, with significant impacts on young mothers and their children. At Save A Youth Africa (SAYA), we recognize the challenges faced by pregnant and parenting teens, particularly in Machakos County, where many young mothers struggle to balance their education and parenting responsibilities.
The Challenge
According to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey, a significant percentage of young women in Kenya are becoming mothers before they reach adulthood. Teenage mothers often face stigma, limited access to healthcare, and inadequate support systems. This can lead to adverse outcomes, including dropping out of school and financial instability.
Our Initiative
SAYA’s Teen Mothers’ Program (TMP) aims to provide pregnant and parenting teens with the resources and support they need to thrive. Our program offers comprehensive services, including counseling, parenting workshops, and educational support. We focus on creating a nurturing environment where young mothers can gain confidence, learn vital life skills, and access healthcare services for themselves and their babies.
Community Engagement
Community involvement is essential for the success of the TMP. We work closely with local organizations, health workers, and community leaders to raise awareness about the challenges faced by teen mothers. By fostering dialogue and promoting education, we aim to reduce stigma and encourage community support for these young women.
Success Stories
Since its inception, the TMP has impacted numerous young mothers in Machakos. One participant, Mary, shared her journey from uncertainty to empowerment. With the support of SAYA, she completed her education, learned parenting skills, and even started her small business. Mary’s story is just one of many illustrating the transformative power of our program.
Call to Action
We invite individuals, organizations, and communities to join us in supporting young mothers through the TMP. Your contributions can provide essential resources and create opportunities for these young women to build brighter futures for themselves and their children. Together, we can empower the next generation of mothers in Machakos and beyond.
